Department of Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
The Department of Basic Sciences is considered one of the most important departments in the faculty, as it provides students of these departments with the necessary knowledge in mathematics, physics, and chemistry to serve the fields of their precise specializations. Although it does not grant any academic degree, its role is essential in developing students' capabilities and supporting the research process at the university, as its members have published more than /50/ scientific papers, noting that their number did not exceed /15/ fifteen members throughout its long history, and most of them have moved to other universities located in their places of residence.
Department Vision: The department aspires to advance the educational process by developing curricula and proposing study plans in line with the needs and requirements of the departments.
Department Objectives: The department aims to:
1- Continuous development of study courses.
2- Providing engineering students with skills in mathematics, physics, and chemistry and helping them continue their education.
3- Contributing to the research process at the faculty.
Courses Taught by the Department:
1- Mathematics: In this field, the department teaches the following courses for the first and second years: Mathematics (1) and Mathematics (2) for all departments at a rate of 4 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours, except for the Communications Department, where their number of hours is 4 theoretical including practical hours. Mathematics (3) and Mathematics (4) at a rate of 2 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours, except for the Communications Department, 4 hours including practical.
2- Physics: Physics (1) at a rate of 2 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours for the departments (Computers – Energy – Medical – Production – Marine), and 4 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours for the departments (Mechatronics – Communications – Power). Physics (2) at a rate of 2 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours for the departments (Production – Power – Energy – Marine – Medical).
3- Chemistry: At a rate of 2 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours for the two departments (Production – Power), 4 theoretical hours and 2 practical hours for the Marine Department.
