History of the University

Latakia University (formerly Tishreen University), a public university headquartered in Latakia, is the third largest university in the Syrian Arab Republic. The university was established in 1971 (under the name Latakia University), and the necessary measures were taken to commence studies in three faculties at the beginning of the academic year 1971/1972: the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Agriculture. It initially occupied various separate locations within the city of Lattakia.

The university's name was changed in 1975 to include the new designation, Tishreen University. It comprises faculties and higher institutes for various scientific specializations, research centers, a large university city, and diverse types of university services. The university also includes a number of facilities, such as specialized hospitals like Tishreen University Hospital.

The university has undergone extensive and significant development and now includes eighteen faculties, three specialized higher institutes, ten technical institutes, and three centers of excellence. The university grants 280 academic degrees, including bachelor's degrees and postgraduate degrees (master's and doctorate). The university is a member of numerous local, regional, and international bodies, unions, and research networks, in addition to having signed many agreements and partnerships with Arab and local institutions, as well as European and international universities. The expansion and diversification within the university have enabled the construction of a distinguished scientific and technical edifice and the establishment of a prominent social and cultural legacy for the university through the educational, scientific, and cultural activities carried out by its diverse academic and administrative staff, varied in their qualifications and specializations.

Study Programs: Formal education – Open Education – and diploma, master's, and doctorate programs. Degrees awarded by the university: Lattakia University grants bachelor's, master's, and doctorate degrees in numerous and diverse specializations.

The university's name was changed to Latakia University based on Resolution No. 3 of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, dated 25/12/2024, and the name was adopted by Presidential Decree No. 100 dated 15/06/2025.

University Establishment Decree

The university was established by legislative decree No. (12) issued on May 20, 1971 (in the name of Latakia University).

The name of the university was amended according to the legislative decree No. (25) in 1975, including the new name of Tishreen University.

The university's name was changed to Latakia University based on Resolution No. (3) of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, dated December 25, 2024, and the name was adopted by Presidential Decree No. (100) dated June 15, 2025.
